Playwright vs Selenium
If you are setting up browser end-to-end tests, these two are the usual finalists. Playwright is a modern framework with auto-waiting and one API across browsers. Selenium is the long-standing WebDriver standard, with the widest language and browser reach and a huge existing ecosystem.
| Dimension | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A modern browser automation framework from Microsoft | The WebDriver standard for driving real browsers |
| License | Open source | Open source |
| Languages | JS/TS, Python, Java, .NET | Java, Python, C#, Ruby, JS, and more |
| Browsers | Chromium, Firefox, WebKit (Safari engine) | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, others |
| Waiting | Auto-waits on elements by default | Manual, explicit, or fluent waits |
| Setup | Bundled browsers, one install | You manage drivers and browser versions |
| Debugging | Trace viewer, codegen, video | Logs and screenshots, less built in |
| Best for | New suites that want low flake quickly | Broad language reach and existing grids |
You are starting fresh and want tests that are stable out of the box. Playwright's auto-waiting removes most of the flaky-sleep problem. The trace viewer makes failures easy to read. One install gets you all three browser engines, including WebKit.
Your team works in a language Playwright does not cover, or you already have a large Selenium suite and a Grid running. Selenium has the widest ecosystem, so it is the safe pick when you need that reach or you are maintaining what already exists.
For a new suite today, I reach for Playwright. The auto-waiting alone removes a whole class of flaky failures that people spend weeks fighting in Selenium, and the debugging tools are better. Selenium is still a serious, capable tool, especially if you are already invested or need a language Playwright does not support. The mistake is rewriting a working Selenium suite into Playwright for the logo. Most flakiness comes from hard sleeps and bad test isolation. You can fix a lot of that in Selenium with proper explicit waits and never migrate.
